There are two ways to lodge a Thai retirement visa application: at a Royal Thai Embassy / Consulate in your home country, or directly with Thai Immigration while you are inside Thailand. Each has its own requirements and timelines — here is how they compare.
Channel 1 is handled abroad and usually issues the Non-Immigrant O-A visa. Channel 2 is handled inside Thailand and focuses on your financial evidence — with no criminal record, medical certificate or insurance required at submission.
Apply abroad in your home country or country of permanent residence. Most embassies and consulates issue the Non-Immigrant O-A (Long Stay) visa type.
Submit at the Thai Immigration headquarters or sub-immigration offices while you are in Thailand. Authorities mainly focus on your financial evidence.
Bangkok, ThailandIf applying abroad feels complicated, the in-Thailand immigration channel keeps things simple — the focus is on your financial evidence, with no criminal record, medical certificate or insurance needed at submission.
Applicants can submit their visa applications at the Thai Embassy / Royal Thai Consulate in their home country or where they hold permanent residence status. Note that most Thai embassies and consulates usually issue the Non-Immigrant O-A visa type.
A criminal record from your own country and your country of permanent residence, with a validity of at least 3 months.
A medical record proving the applicant has never been infected with a contagious disease, with a validity of at least 3 months (in accordance with the Immigration Act B.E.2522).
The documents stated above must be certified by a Notary Public or by the competent authority concerned of the country of application. The Criminal Record must also be certified by the Royal Thai Police in Bangkok.
If you wish to be accompanied by your spouse, the marriage certificate will be attached. However, your spouse will be granted the Non-Immigrant "O" visa instead of the "O-A" (Long Stay).
Medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 100,000 USD (3 million Baht). This policy has been enforced since 1 October 2022 onwards.
The Thai Government and the Thai immigration authorities will be reducing the policy coverage to 400,000 Thai Baht soon for the Non-OA Visa Holder. Awaiting official confirmation.
